A “he”,
a “she” and an “it.”
Set in modern day Karachi, Shrine follows
one night in the lives of a masseuse,
a prostitute and a eunuch. Three friends
who meet every evening before they disperse
into city rush to make rupees the only
way they have been taught to.
Born in a whorehouse, Payal had always
dreamt of freedom and true love. Although
the night brings a glimmer of hope,
fate quickly intervenes and she is held
back to a life leashed onto dancing
bells. A secret past that she was told
about remains buried with another new
secret that unravels during the night.
…chun, chun, chun…
Kidnapped from an impoverished family
at a young age, Noshi always witnessed
a life of being claimed by family after
family of hijras. Determined to discover
his past, and with the help of a colorful
array of characters like Guru, her hijra
sisters; Paro, Shehzadi and Zoya as
well as an outcast befriended in secret
called Gulabo; Noshi learns of the truth
and rituals of a world she had never
been prepared to know.
…clap, clap, clap…
A pessimist ever since he had arrived
in the city of lights in search of an
office job, Majoo gave up menial wages
of teahouses and car workshops to begin
work as a masseur at the Shrine. Jerking
his oil bottles and with an obsession
for “first-class” cars that
drive by, he allows readers into his
own dreams “dreamt only when others
aren't watching” - and then later
realizes the harsh dejection of fate
himself.
…clank, clank, clank…
A page turner with twists and turns
the entire night; the protagonist's
paths unknowingly cross several times
through interaction with unforgettable
characters and infamous landmarks that
linger by the shrine. Master the tailor,
Kashmir Teahouse, Neelam Colony, Gentalman
Barbershop, Bollywood Billiards, Bobby's
TV/Video, The Sind Club Ball and Cry-Baby.
